Steps to Becoming a Registered Nurse in Malaysia

Your journey begins by enrolling in a recognised nursing institution approved by the Malaysian Nursing Board (Lembaga Jururawat Malaysia – LJM). Depending on your academic goals, you can choose between:

  • - Diploma in Nursing (3 years)
  • - Bachelor of Nursing (Hons) (4 years)

These programmes combine:

  • - Theoretical knowledge (nursing science, pharmacology, anatomy)
  • - Practical lab training
  • - Clinical placements in hospitals or community health facilities

💡 Tip: Choose an institution listed under LJM’s approved provider list to ensure eligibility for the national exam.

After completing your nursing programme, you must sit for the LJM Examination – the official licensing exam administered by the Nursing Board of Malaysia.

The exam evaluates:

  • - Clinical decision-making
  • - Core nursing knowledge
  • - Patient care and ethical practice

Passing this exam is mandatory to qualify for registration as a nurse.

Once you’ve passed the LJM exam, submit your application for registration with LJM. Required documents include:

  • - Academic transcripts
  • - Identity card or passport
  • - Medical fitness certificate
  • - LJM exam results

Upon approval, you will be officially recognised as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Malaysia.

To legally work as a nurse, you must obtain the Annual Practising Certificate (APC), which confirms your eligibility to practise each year.

Renewal Requirements:

  • ✅ Proof of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours
  • ✅ Updated employment history
  • ✅ Valid registration with LJM

Important

The APC is mandatory for employment in both public and private healthcare settings. Practising without a valid APC is illegal in Malaysia.
