Sun Pharma Receives Indian Approval for Liraglutide

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries has received approval from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) to manufacture a generic version of semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist used for weight management and type-2 diabetes.

  • Indication: The drug is positioned in the same therapeutic class as Wegovy and Ozempic (semaglutide-based), targeting chronic weight management and glycaemic control.
  • Regulatory Status: Domestic sales in India will occur after Novo Nordisk’s semaglutide patent expires in March 2026; until then, Sun Pharma will manufacture it (including for export).
  • Administration: Semaglutide is administered via a once-weekly subcutaneous injection in prefilled pens.
