Verily, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has expanded its mosquito production and release facility in Singapore to support ongoing efforts under Project Wolbachia to control the Aedes aegypti mosquito population.

• Facility Expansion: The Kaki Bukit facility has increased in size from 20,000 sq ft to 28,000 sq ft and will enhance automation in mosquito rearing, sorting and release processes.
• Methodology: The system uses AI-assisted sorting to separate male and female mosquitoes. Male Wolbachia-Aedes mosquitoes are then released to mate with females, resulting in eggs that do not hatch.
• Public Health Objective: The Wolbachia method aims to suppress mosquito populations and reduce dengue transmission without the use of chemical insecticides.
