Researchers at the LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed), in collaboration with the InnoHK Advanced Biomedical Instrumentation Centre (ABIC), have developed a nasal spray designed for prehospital emergency treatment of ischaemic stroke.

• Technology: The “NanoPowder nasal spray” uses a nano-in-micron delivery system that enables drug particles to be inhaled, deposited in the nasal cavity, and converted into nanoparticles that travel along the nose-to-brain pathway, bypassing the blood-brain barrier.
• Clinical findings: In animal studies, the approach was associated with a reduction in brain damage by over 80%, alongside protection of neurological and motor functions.
• Purpose and application: The system is intended for early intervention at the onset of stroke symptoms to deliver medication before hospital treatment, with potential to improve survival and neurological recovery outcomes.
